The quilt works were highly structured and I needed a new direction. Perhaps a pile of overlapping scraps inspired me or perhaps it was the work of Mark Tobey, but I decided to take the opposing approach to create spontaneous works, with less formal structure. In Tobey’s paintings you must sort your way through them. The artist doesn’t have a focal point nor dictate the path of the observer. So these works have a combination of colored paper fragments, sewn shapes and sometimes plastic “toys”. I have enjoyed this departure from the tight structure.
